An experience report
By double decker through kiel
There are so many ways to discover the Fördestadt Kiel. By foot on a city tour, by bike on a guided bike tour and and and. But none is as comfortable as the hop-on hop-off tour with the red double-decker buses of City Sightseeing. Above all, the bus tour is great fun in both bright sunshine and rainy slushy weather. The first stop of the tour is at the train station. From here, you can really let yourself drift. The first part of the tour leads along the water, so you get an impression of the maritime flair of Kiel.
On the way, you can marvel at the really big cruise pots and at stop number 4, you will find the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament. At this point, a short walk is worthwhile, because nearby, furry swimmers are waiting for curious onlookers. Here the seals from GEOMAR show their skills. In the northern part of Kiel, the red bus drives past the Flanders Bunker - a remnant of World War II that houses various exhibitions - and into the city's maritime quarter.
Once at the Kiel Canal, the observation deck offers an excellent view of the goings-on in the lock. Did you know that the canal, which runs from Kiel to Brunsbüttel, is the busiest shipping lane in the world? From this stop, the ride on the small ferry, the so-called shoebox, to the other side of the canal is almost obligatory, because there lies the maritime Thiessenkai with the historic lighthouse from 1895. After that, we head for the home stretch. During the somewhat longer journey between the last stops, you can enjoy the flair of the fjord city in comfort and review what you have seen.
Passing the Holstein Stadion, where the Kiel "Störche" kick in the second league, the bus takes its passengers further to the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. Along Holtenauer Straße, Kiel's popular shopping street, you will get plenty of inspiration for your next shopping trip. The round trip is perfect to get an overview of the city and its sights. But not only visitors to Kiel get ideas for an excursion here and during the trip. Even real Kielers will discover one or the other highlight. So hop on!
