Kiel sprats

The well-known Kiel sprats are a small, heering-like sea fish traditionally smoked over beech and alder wood. Genuine Kiel sprats originate from the greater Kiel Bay area.

However, the name of the Kiel sprat is disputed. In Eckernförde, the story is widespread that the sprats were produced in Eckernförde and got the transport stamp "Kiel" by being transported via Kiel's main railway station. However, sprats were already mentioned in old documents before the transport route via Kiel station existed.

By the way, old-established inhabitants of the state capital also refer to themselves as Kieler Sprotten.
