The Ocean Race Europe 2025
What an event: The Ocean Race Europe provided plenty of spine-tingling moments in its starting port of Kiel. The Ocean Live Park along the Kiellinie was packed with sailing enthusiasts for days on end. Every seat on and in the water was taken for the speed runs, and the sailors were cheered like rock stars: Kiel Sailing City is in the grip of Ocean Race fever!
Now five IMOCAs and their teams are on their way along the first leg to Portsmouth. Biotherm was the first to cross the finish line off the British coast, while Team Malizia managed to overtake Paprec Arkéa shortly after sunrise, securing second place after a spectacular final sprint. Unfortunately, after a collision between Holcim and Allagrande Mapei, two of the seven IMOCAs and their teams had to return to the port of Kiel.
Following the exciting start in Kiel, most of the teams participating in The Ocean Race Europe have now arrived in Portsmouth. Biotherm was the first to cross the finish line off the British coast, while Team Malizia managed to overtake Paprec Arkéa shortly after sunrise, securing second place after a magnificent final sprint. Behind them followed Paprec Arkéa, Canada Ocean Racing – Be Water Positive and Team Amaala.
After the crash on Sunday, Team Holcim - PRB left Kiel on Thursday evening at 10:30 p.m. and headed for Portsmouth. Allagrande Mapei followed on Friday morning. Both teams brought their repaired Imocas to the start of the leg in time.
On Sunday, all seven teams set off from Portsmouth on the second leg of the Ocean Race Europe 2025. The previously damaged boats were also able to compete again after successful repairs. At the first scoring point, Biotherm secured two points and pulled away from Malizia. Paprec Arkéa picked up one point and is now in second place, with Malizia following in third. The race continues across the high seas to Cartagena. Team Malizia is sailing the current leg without Boris Herrmann, who is being replaced as planned by Briton Will Harris. Harris is taking on the role of co-skipper and will steer the longer high seas leg in Herrmann's absence.

Conference on sustainable marine policy
Ocean Race Summit
The Ocean Race Summit took place on 7 August 2025 during the Ocean Race Europe in Kiel. Under the motto ‘Connecting Europe for a Smart Ocean’, representatives from politics, science and sailing came together to discuss joint approaches to protecting the oceans.
Among those attending was State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth, Kiel's Lord Mayor Ulf Kämpfer and Schleswig-Holstein's Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt. Together, they sent a clear signal for sustainable marine policy – factually sound, internationally networked and with a clear focus on the future.

We love the sea
For many people, their favourite path leads to the sea. They sail, surf, kite, dive to the seabed or experience pure romance at sunset by the water.
For us Kielers, one thing is clear: we prefer swimming in the fjord to swimming in work. We love our Baltic Sea, jump into the cold water even in winter, fish for sea trout and herring; some of us are baptised in the Baltic waves and buried in the sea.
Yes, we are crazy about the sea. But our sea is in danger. Find out why and how we can protect it here.
