The Lighthouse Swim is getting a new route – bringing it closer to Kiel city centre. The new 4-kilometre course starts at the bathing jetty at the sailing camp on the Kiellinie, runs along the inner fjord to the Seebar at the Düsternbrook seaside resort, and back again.

The new route makes the Lighthouse Swim less dependent on the weather and, at the same time, more accessible for everyone: spectators can follow large sections of the race on foot along the Kiellinie and cheer on the swimmers time and again. This makes the Lighthouse Swim not only a sporting highlight in the water, but also a special event for anyone who wants to enjoy the atmosphere on the Kiel Fjord.
Swimming for marine conservation
The Lighthouse Swim is not only a sporting challenge, but also conveys a clear message: together with the participants, the event sends a strong message in support of the protection and conservation of the sea – which makes Kiel so special for locals and visitors alike.
The Lighthouse Swim was initiated by the association The Bay Areas e. V., in collaboration with Kiel-Marketing and dedicated swimmers from Kiel and San Francisco. This gave rise to a unifying project as part of the active town twinning between the two coastal cities.
The Lighthouse Swim is accompanied by a varied and informative supporting programme at the Kiel Sailing Camp. The focus is on topics relating to marine conservation – with opportunities for participants and visitors to get involved, learn and exchange ideas.
