Where history meets elegance:
Düsternbrook villa neighbourhood
Beautiful, chic and stylish - let yourself be enchanted by Kiel's popular neighbourhood. Whether by bike or on foot, there is plenty to discover in the elegant Düsternbrook residential neighbourhood. Incidentally, it owes its name to the Düsternbrook grove, which originally lay outside the city limits. An avenue of chestnut trees, the Düsternbrooker Weg, connected the grove to Kiel Castle at the beginning of the 19th century and made it a popular destination for excursions. From 1869 it officially belonged to Kiel. With a seaside bathing establishment, a park with a garden pavilion and the villas that were built, an elegant and modern neighbourhood developed, which to this day has some of the most idyllic places to offer and is a real eye-catcher!
Beautiful and close to the water:
Dream villas with fjord views
Düsternbrook is probably one of Kiel's most beautiful and popular neighbourhoods. This is not only due to the beautiful villas that line up here. The prestigious country houses and villas in Düsternbrooker Weg or Niemannsweg were built from 1880 onwards and are still characterised by their gardens, open balconies, turrets and bay windows. It's enough to make you dream. But what makes the neighbourhood just as popular is its immediate proximity to the Kiel Fjord and the many green and wooded areas. And in between: a few shopping and dining addresses.
Stage under the open sky:
The Krusenkoppel
If you follow Düsternbrooker Weg, you will reach Krusenkoppel at the level of the state parliament - a spacious park with a great view of the fjord. the open-air cinema was opened here in 1950 and is now the second largest open-air theatre in Schleswig-Holstein. During Kiel Week, the Krusenkoppel becomes a play paradise for kids and numerous music events take place on the stage in summer. In addition to the "gewaltig leise" concert series, the "Kieler Konzert gegen die Kälte" charity event also attracts a number of celebrities to the city.

Düsternbrook shopping corner
A few shops have also set up shop in the Düsternbrook district. Wine lovers, for example, will find an exquisite selection at Weinhaus Tiemann at Feldstraße 114. And on the corner of Feldstraße and Esmarchstraße, "Antik" offers a beautiful selection of antique rarities.
Park idyll with a beer garden feeling:
Forest nursery
One of the most beautiful parks is the forest nursery. The former tree nursery is now Kiel's oldest park. Especially on warm summer evenings, the large outdoor area of the restaurant of the same name is a popular meeting place for Kiel residents. In addition to refreshing drinks and delicious food, music events provide entertainment. Between the Forstbaumschule and the fjord lies Diederichsenpark, which offers a fantastic view of the water with its steep slope down to the fjord.
Urban forest with a sea view:
Düsternbrook grove
From the fresh sea breeze to unspoilt forest air, the Kiellinie and parallel to it the Düsternbrooker Weg lead to the forest of the same name, the Düsternbrooker Gehölz. Charmingly laid out paths lead you and all other walkers past rustling deciduous trees and green meadows. Between the leaves, you can always catch a glimpse of the Kiel Fjord with its large ferries and small sailing boats. The perfect place to unwind in the greenery.
