A day in Kiel – for day visitors
Anyone visiting Kiel for the day will soon realise that this city leaves you wanting more! With its maritime charm, the hustle and bustle of the city centre and relaxing oases right by the fjord, everything is within easy reach here – ideal for making the most of your day trip.
9.30 am, Welcome Café
MORNING REFRESHMENTS: Not far from the main railway station, the day begins with breakfast at the café in the Kiel Welcome Centre. With a cappuccino, savoury snacks or something sweet, you can recharge your batteries here for the day ahead
10.30 am, Holstenstraße
A STROLL THROUGH KIEL CITY CENTRE: Time to browse and be amazed! Whilst window-shopping along Kiel’s Holstenstraße, a visit to Heimathafen is a must. Here you’ll find a wide range of handcrafted and ethically produced goods from start-ups and creative people from Kiel and the surrounding area.
12 noon, marina
A REFRESHMENT WITH A VIEW OF THE HARBOUR: The marina, with its many places to sit, is the perfect spot for a breather. You can enjoy delicious pizza and pasta at Cup & Cino, for example!
1.00 pm, Pop-up Pavilion to the Palace Gardens
A STROLL THROUGH THE GREEN SPACES: We continue with a walk round the Alter Markt, where it’s well worth taking a look at the regularly changing exhibitions in the Pop-up Pavilion. Afterwards, a detour to the Kleiner Kiel is highly recommended. The walk here takes you past the Town Hall and the Opera House, through Hiroshima Park and the Ratsdienergarten, all the way to the Schloßgarten. Relaxation is guaranteed here. Opposite, at the Ostseekai, large cruise ships dock and are supplied with shore power. This means fewer air pollutants and less noise, creating a more pleasant atmosphere for a short break.
2.00 pm, Old Botanical Garden
(Schwanenweg 14)
KIEL’S GARDEN OF EDEN: Just a few metres further on lies a green oasis. On the two-and-a-half-hectare, undulating grounds of the Old Botanical Garden, visitors can admire exotic plants as well as various small biotopes, shrubs, perennials and a magnificent display of flowers. From the viewing pavilion, you’ll also be rewarded with a sweeping view across the garden and out over the Kiel Fjord.
3.00 pm, Main Station ferry terminal
SHIP AHoy! What makes a trip to Kiel truly perfect? That’s right – a harbour tour! On this roughly two-hour cruise around the fjord, you can experience traditional sailing ships, ferries and luxury liners up close, as well as the activity at the shipyards and the hustle and bustle in front of the North Sea–Baltic Canal lock.
5.05 pm, Sailing Camp (Kiellinie)
A STROLL ALONG THE WATER’S EDGE: With dry ground beneath your feet once more, the walk continues to the Kiellinie. Passing the seal pool, the Geomar Aquarium, small stalls and restaurants, you’ll reach the Sailing Camp in just a few minutes’ walk – a magnet for active types, sports fans and those who’ve packed their swimming gear, as you can take a dip in the cool water at the bathing spot. Alongside volleyball courts and sailing dinghies, the Sailing Camp grounds also feature a cosy fish stall. With sand beneath your feet and a view of the fjord, the fish rolls taste just that bit better here.
6.00 pm, SEEBAR Düsternbrook
(Kiellinie 130)
FINISHING OFF WITH A SUNDOWNER: The grand finale to a perfect day takes place at the SEEBAR Düsternbrook. The beach bar on the water is one of the best places to round off the day as the sun sets. A refreshing drink and a delicious dinner are the perfect finishing touch to this eventful day out.
