One day in Kiel

If you only spend one day in Kiel, this is the perfect itinerary for you. You will realize that one day is far too short to explore this city and you will probably have to come back again.

Welcome Café

9:30 a.m. Welcome Café

BREAKFAST IN THE MORNING: Not far from the main train station, the day starts with breakfast in the café of Kiel's Welcome Center. With a cappuccino, hearty snacks or something sweet, you can charge your batteries for the day ahead.

Holstenstraße

10:30 a.m. Holstenstraße

CITY-SPREE IN KIEL: Time to browse and admire! When window shopping in Kiel's Holstenstraße, the KOSMOS concept store is a must-visit. Here you will find many handmade and fairly produced products from start-ups and creative people from Kiel and the surrounding area.

12 p.m. Bootshafen

REFRESHMENT WITH A VIEW OF THE HARBOUR: The Bootshafen with its many seating options is a great place to take a break. Delicious pizza and pasta are available at Cup & Cino, for example!

Pop-up Pavillon

13 p.m. from the Pop-up Pavillon to Schloßgarten

A WALK IN THE GREEN: The tour continues with a walk around the Alter Markt, where it is worth taking a look at the regularly changing exhibitions in the Pop-up Pavillon. Afterwards, a detour to the Kleiner Kiel is recommended. The walk here takes you past the town hall and the opera house, through Hiroshimapark and the Ratsdienergarten to the Schloßgarten. Here, relaxation is guaranteed. On the opposite lies Ostseekai, where the large cruise ships arrive and are supplied with shore power. This means less air pollution and less noise, and overall a nicer ambience for a short break.

Botanischer Garten

14 p.m. Alter Botanischer Garten (Schwanenweg 14)

THE GARDEN OF EDEN IN KIEL: Just a few metres away is a green oasis. On the two-and-a-half-hectare, hilly grounds of the Alter Botanischer Garten (Old Botanical Garden), you can admire exotic plants as well as various microhabitats, shrubs, perennials and a beautiful sea of flowers. In the viewing pavilion you get rewarded with a wide view over the garden and the Kiel Fjord.

15:05 p.m. Ferry terminal at Seegarten (Seegartenbrücke)

SHIP AHOY! What makes a trip perfect? Exactly – a harbour tour! On the two-hour cruise you can experience traditional sailing ships, ferries, dream ships and the goings-on in the shipyards as well as the hustle and bustle in front of the locks of the Kiel Canal.

Kiellinie

17.05 p.m. Sailing camp (Kiellinie)

STROLLING ALONG THE WATER: With your feet on the ground again, you can continue to the Kiellinie. Walk past the seal basin, the Geomar aquarium, small stalls and restaurants and you will reach the sailing camp in a few minutes walk – an attraction for active people, sports fans and those who have packed their swimwear, because you can also jump into the cold water at the bathing area. Besides volleyball courts and dinghies, a cosy fish shack is also part of the sailing camp area. With sand under your feet and a view of the fjord, the fish sandwiches taste even better here.

Seebar

18 p.m. SEEBAR in Düsternbrook (Kiellinie 130)

END THE DAY WITH A SUNDOWNER: The grand finale of the perfect day takes place at the SEEBAR in Düsternbrook. The beach bar on the water is one of the best places to end the day at sunset. A sparkling drink and a delicious dinner put the cherry on the cake.
