Tips for the summer holidays in Kiel

Dive in, please: in the SEALEVEL experience zone, you can experience the fascinating underwater world up close. Discover interactive hands-on stations, exciting exhibits from marine research and learn why protecting our oceans is so important. Creative types can also find inspiration at the monthly SEA + PAINTING event organised by the marine painters and pick up a brush themselves to explore changing themes.

📍 Holstenstraße 2–12, Kiel

During the STEINEFESTIVAL at CITTI-PARK Kiel, running from 15 June to 1 August, a creative highlight for the whole family awaits you. LEGO® fans and exhibitors will be showcasing impressive structures, intricately detailed themed worlds and landscapes that invite you to explore and marvel – so dive into the world of colourful bricks!

📍 Mühlendamm 1, Kiel

A special summer experience awaits you at Kiel Botanical Garden: from 25 June to 23 August, the Tropical House will be transformed into a colourful butterfly paradise. Up to 60 species flutter freely around here! Every day from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, you’ll have the chance to watch the butterflies, whilst expert staff are on hand to answer any questions you may have about these dazzling creatures.

Anyone spending their summer holidays in Kiel should definitely visit the sailing camp on the Kiellinie. Whether they’re trying their hand at sailing for the first time or are already experienced at the helm: children and teenagers of pretty much any ability can set sail here in a range of courses – but adults also have the chance to take part in sailing trips.

The holiday activities at the Probstei Museum in Schönberg are all about discovering, trying things out and getting involved! Whether it’s unearthing real fossils in the ‘Fossil Workshop’, ‘Amber Polishing’ and designing their own piece of jewellery, or ‘Milking and Churning’, where children learn in a fun way how milking was done in the past and how various products are made from milk. In the ‘Ropes and Knots’ session, children learn about the work of a rope-making workshop, try their hand at twisting rope and tying knots, and put their skills to the test with skipping. And the ‘Little Art Workshop’, for example, is designed for all creative minds. Out in the open air, using paints, brushes and plenty of imagination, they create little works of art to take home.

There’s something for puzzle fans too: join Detective Dachs on the Detective Trail as you set out in search of a missing ship’s crew, solving exciting puzzles in the city’s most beautiful spots along the way. Collect clues, master tricky challenges and get closer to the mystery step by step. Along the way, you’ll discover fascinating corners of Kiel, learn interesting facts about the city and enjoy a little adventure together. Anyone who successfully solves all the puzzles will get to open the treasure chest at the end – and look forward to a special surprise. You can get tickets here.

Ice cream’s always a hit in summer: pop into one of Kiel’s many ice-cream parlours and try your way through the different flavours. If you’re in the mood for something special, Yomaro is the place to go: here you can create your own frozen yoghurt with a wide selection of toppings to suit your taste. Also delicious: Packeis! This regional ice lolly is made right here in Kiel and is available at various spots around the city.

Head out into the countryside and discover local wildlife: Kiel’s five wildlife enclosures are home to over 200 animals and make ideal destinations for a day out during the summer holidays. Here, you can observe fallow deer, roe deer and other animal residents up close. A bit of a walk, a bit of exploring, a bit of a picnic – sounds great! There’s plenty to see and learn, especially for children, as the large information boards at the enclosures provide detailed information about the animal species.

What would a summer’s day be without a trip to the water’s edge? That’s right – nothing! Pack your beach bag and grab everything you need for a relaxing day by the sea. How about a little ‘mini-cruise’ on the Kiel Fjord? From the Reventlou jetty, the ferry will take you in no time to popular beach destinations such as Mönkeberg, Friedrichsort or Falckenstein. If you prefer to be active, you can also cycle to the beaches and enjoy the route along the coast. Whether it’s building sandcastles, going for a swim or simply soaking up the sun – the beaches around Kiel are lovely places to make the most of your summer holidays.

At the Howaldt Metal Foundry, you can experience fire, craftsmanship and history first-hand! In the Industrial Museum’s casting workshop, adults and children aged 8 and over can try their hand at it: mould your own coin and create a cool souvenir using molten tin. Along the way, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the traditional craft of casting, the working world of days gone by and the products that were once made here. Taking part is free – if you’d like to take your self-cast coin home with you, there’s a 7-euro charge for materials.

If the weather turns a bit rubbish during the summer holidays, it’s no problem! At the Mediendom at HAW Kiel, you can look forward to impressive 360° shows that will whisk you away. Yes, whisk you away – to distant galaxies and exciting adventures! Whether it’s captivating children’s stories or fascinating journeys through space: the whole family will have a great time here.

Where are our adventure seekers and night owls? We’ve thought of you too! When the sun sets over Falckensteiner Beach, night-time climbing begins at the High Spirits high ropes course. As you climb high up through the trees, the forest glows with soft lights and is bathed in a special atmosphere. If you ask us: it’s a brilliant highlight if you enjoy climbing high and fancy a bit of an adventure.

📍 Falckensteiner Strand 15, Kiel

From 27 July to 22 August, the car park at CITTI-PARK Kiel will be transformed into a small trampoline arena. At the Quadro Highjump, you can launch yourself up to eight metres into the air, try your hand at your first somersaults and soar to dizzying heights! And don’t worry: the experienced team on site will ensure your safety and provide professional supervision.

📍 Mühlendamm 1, Kiel

This is exactly what summer holidays should be like: cinema, the sea and that summer vibe! Every Tuesday in August, the dyke in Kalifornien is transformed into an open-air cinema right by the Baltic Sea. Watching a film under the open sky, with the sound of the waves in the background and a brilliant setting – sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it! There’s live music to enjoy from 7 pm onwards, before the film starts at 9 pm. Best of all: entry is free. Just pack a picnic blanket, bring your friends and family, and off you go!

📍 Buhne 25, Schönberg

Another thing you definitely shouldn’t miss: the children’s holiday programme at the Maritime Museum! Join storyteller Brigitte Harkou on a journey of discovery into the world of pirates and seafarers. Look forward to gripping stories full of brave captains and hidden treasures. Afterwards, you’ll create your own little pirate ship and set off on a treasure hunt full of tricky puzzles. To round things off, you can take part in the pirate quiz to see if you’ve got what it takes to be a real pirate.
