Stunning and right on Kiel’s doorstep: Falckensteiner Beach! At almost three kilometres long, there’s plenty of space here to relax, sunbathe and go for a swim. And if you’re looking for a bit of action, you’ll find plenty here too – whether it’s climbing at the High Spirits high ropes course, trying out water sports at the Westwind SUP & Surf School in Kiel, playing mini-golf at Golf und Mee(h)r, or hitting the volleyball courts.

There’s something for everyone in Schilksee, as the beach is divided into different sections – including a nudist area and a dog beach. Particularly handy for families with (young) children: the water stays pleasantly calm thanks to the breakwaters, and the DLRG keeps an eye on swimmers. There’s also a beach chair hire service, food and drink options, and even pedal boat hire! And if you want to let off steam not just in the water but on land too, you can make free use of the volleyball courts and get smashing away.

Originally a fishing village, Strande quickly became a magnet for anyone looking to relax and enjoy a spot of fun in the water! The main attraction is the wide sandy beach – with the water sloping gently into the sea, it’s ideal not just for grown-ups but for little water lovers too. What’s more, as the home of the Kiel Surf Club, water sports are naturally very popular here!

Mönkeberg Beach

Mönkeberger Strand

If you take a ferry – such as the Förde ferry – to Mönkeberg, you’ll arrive at three small, family-friendly coves that are perfect for a swim. Right next door is the idyllic marina with its tiny lighthouse, the ‘Juliusturm’. If you fancy doing more than just lying on the beach and sizzling in the sun, simply follow the Fjord Walking Trail and stroll along the fjord via Kitzeberg and Heikendorf all the way to Laboe.

Laboe offers the ultimate holiday atmosphere: a white sandy beach, a pretty harbour, and the famous Naval Memorial, which offers a superb view of the fjord! You can also stroll along the promenade, grab a fish sandwich and browse through the many little shops! Good to know: The water slopes relatively gently across the whole beach area – perfect for children!

Not keen on crowds? Then head to Stein! This natural beach, with its dunes, sandbanks and even cliffs, has a real sense of unspoilt charm. As there’s plenty of space to run about on the bathing jetty, the beach at Stein is particularly popular with families. Our tip: Drinks and snacks are available at the popular beach bar Tatort Hawaii.

At the beach, are you more of a ‘relax’ sort or an ‘action’ sort? Although… actually, the question is rather pointless, because at Heidkate you can do both! The 3.7-kilometre-long natural beach attracts not only visitors who want to relax and soak up the sun behind the sea wall, but also surfers keen to ride the waves. You’ll find the surf spot between the 4th and 5th groynes. Our tip: make sure you catch the absolutely stunning sunset in Heidkate – ideally whilst enjoying a cosy picnic!

Brazil

Why travel to South America when you can have a bit of Brazil right here in Schleswig-Holstein?! The beach, which is around 1.6 kilometres long, has wonderfully fine sand, and the sea glistens a deep blue … only the dyke gives away the fact that we’re standing on North German soil. Things get really wild at the Action and Fun Beach: here, the ‘Wassersport Brasilien’ surf school offers courses in surfing and windsurfing, amongst other things.

Right at the forefront when it comes to Baltic Sea charm: Schönberg Beach. This is the perfect spot, especially for those who long for peace and quiet, wide open spaces and nature. On one side of the dyke, you can lie back comfortably in the sand with a view of the pier and let the sun warm your belly; on the other side, you can take a leisurely stroll past quaint fishermen’s huts and local pubs – that’s what a holiday’s all about!
