This question is justified. However, Kiel is not planning to host the Games alone, but is a partner in a nationwide bid.
Investments should primarily utilise existing infrastructure and be designed in such a way that they have a long-term effect. This also means that measures can continue to be used after the Games - for example through additional living space or the sustainable further development of existing locations.
The final decision on the bid and its organisation is made by the city council.
A clear JO! for the games
Kiel is ready for the Olympics
63 .5% of votes for 'Yes' - in the referendum on 19 April, the citizens cleared the way for Kiel's participation in the German Olympic bid. This underlines the state capital's claim to be the world's leading sailing centre. On this page you will find all the information on the concept with which we are now entering the national selection process.
Olympics in Germany - Sailing in Kiel
Germany would like to organise the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has four possible host regions in the running: Hamburg, Berlin, Munich or Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr. Regardless of which city wins the bid, Kiel is always in the running to host the sailing competitions.
Kiel offers more than just the best conditions for sailing. Together with the sporting state of Schleswig-Holstein, the region is also set up for other Olympic competitions. The focus here is on handball, rugby, open water swimming and coastal rowing - an independent type of rowing.
Olympic disciplines in Kiel: New impetus for tourism and urban development
The Olympics can be more than just a major sporting event for Kiel: The Olympic and Paralympic Games open up concrete opportunities for Kiel's urban development.
For example, the athletes' village between Schilksee and Strande will continue to be used as affordable housing after the competitions. Investments in modern mobility, efficient sports facilities and digital infrastructure will not only make the region more attractive for visitors, but also more liveable for the local population.
