Düsternbrook: Kiel’s elegant residential district
Welcome to Düsternbrook – the district of Kiel that exudes a very special charm. Here, elegant villas sit alongside plenty of green spaces, and the Kiel Fjord is always just a few steps away. Perfect, then, for a short stroll through one of the city’s most beautiful corners.
Where history meets elegance:
The Düsternbrook residential area
Beautiful, chic and stylish – let yourself be enchanted by Kiel’s most popular neighbourhood. Whether by bike or on foot, there’s plenty to discover in the elegant villa district of Düsternbrook. Incidentally, it owes its name to the Düsternbrooker Gehölz, a wooded area that originally lay outside the city limits. In the early 19th century, a chestnut-lined avenue – the Düsternbrooker Weg – connected the wooded area to Kiel Castle, turning it into a popular destination for day trips. From 1869 onwards, it officially belonged to Kiel. With a seaside resort, a park featuring a garden pavilion and the villas springing up, an elegant and modern neighbourhood developed – one that still boasts some of the most idyllic spots today and really makes a splash!
Beautiful and right by the water:
Dream villas with views of the fjord
Düsternbrook is perhaps one of Kiel’s most beautiful and popular neighbourhoods. This is not only down to the beautiful villas that line the streets here. The stately country houses and villas on Düsternbrooker Weg and Niemannsweg were built from 1880 onwards and are still characterised today by their gardens, open balconies, turrets and bay windows. It’s enough to make you dream. But what makes the neighbourhood just as sought-after is its immediate proximity to the Kiel Fjord and the many green spaces and wooded areas. And in between: a few shopping and dining spots.
Open-air stage:
The Krusenkoppel
If you follow Düsternbrooker Weg, you’ll reach the Krusenkoppel near the state parliament – a spacious park with a fantastic view of the fjord. The open-air cinema opened here in 1950 and is now the second-largest open-air venue in Schleswig-Holstein. During Kiel Week, the Krusenkoppel becomes a playground paradise for children, and the stage hosts numerous music events in the summer. As well as the ‘gewaltig leise’ concert series, the charity event ‘Kieler Konzert gegen die Kälte’ also attracts a number of celebrities to the city.
Fancy a stroll?
Düsternbrook Shopping Corner
A few shops have also set up shop in the Düsternbrook neighbourhood. Wine lovers, for example, will find an exquisite selection at Weinhaus Tiemann, at 114 Feldstraße. And on the corner of Feldstraße and Esmarchstraße, ‘Antik’ offers a lovely selection of antique rarities.
A park idyll with a beer garden atmosphere:
Forest nursery
One of the most beautiful parks is the Forstbaumschule. The former tree nursery is now Kiel’s oldest park. The large outdoor area of the restaurant of the same name is a popular meeting place for the people of Kiel, particularly on balmy summer evenings. As well as refreshing drinks and delicious food, music events provide entertainment. Situated between the Forstbaumschule and the fjord is Diederichsenpark, which, with its steep slope down to the fjord, offers a fantastic view of the water.
A town forest with sea views:
Düsternbrooker Woodland
From the fresh sea breeze to the unspoilt forest air, the Kiellinie and, running parallel to it, the Düsternbrooker Weg lead to the small wood of the same name, the Düsternbrooker Gehölz. Charmingly laid-out paths lead you and all the other walkers past rustling deciduous trees and green meadows. Through the foliage, you’ll catch occasional glimpses of the Kiel Fjord with its large ferries and small sailing boats. The perfect place to unwind amidst the greenery.
